Bruce Bennett Nesheim, 66, died Thursday, March 14.
Funeral services are Tuesday, March 19, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at rural New Town at 11 a.m.
Visitation is Monday, March 18, at Springan Funeral Home in Stanley from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Bruce Bennett Nesheim was born Oct. 9, 1946, to Hans and Ellie (Whit more) Nesheim, in Stanley. He was raised in Van Hook through first grade. The family then moved to New Town to live in a house that Hans had built for them.
After graduating from New Town High School, Bruce attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton from 1964-66, becoming certified in diesel maintenance.
On Aug. 29, 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for a three-year tour of duty serving one term in Vietnam as a bulldozer operator. Bruce received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After his honorable discharge on Aug. 28, 1969, Bruce worked for a short period as a heavy equipment operator on the west coast. In 1975, he became an operator for Ritter (Oster) Construction Company Inc. of Hazen, which later led to his ownership of Nesheim Trucking from 1977-79.
During the winter months, he attended Dickinson State College.
Bruce married Ella May Klatt on July 22, 1972, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Killdeer. They made their home in Dickinson and had two daughters: CaraLee and Michelle.
Bruce was a lecturer in the Heavy Equipment Operators Training Program at Dickinson State College from 1979 until the program was discontinued. Prior to his retirement, Bruce worked as a job supervisor for Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson PC of Dickinson.
He was a member of the American Legion of New Town and Stanley, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
To his many friends and family members Bruce was a loving husband, father, and friend.
The value he placed on education was passed on to his daughters. Both of his girls were taught the skill of making lefse, however; much to his dismay, neither would take a liking to lutefisk.
Bruce will always be remembered for his willingness to help others, often going out of his way to offer help.
Bruce was a history buff by nature. One of the things he most enjoyed was reminiscing with friends and family.
Bruce will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
He is survived by two daughters: CaraLee (Russ) Heiser of Dickinson, and Michelle (James) Williams of Tuscola, Texas; five grandchildren: Drew, Tyra, and Dawson Heiser, Connor and Emma Williams; his brother: William (Candace) Nesheim of Broomfield, Colo.; nephew Troy (Mariann) Nesheim and their son Carter, niece Erika (Kelly) Taga and their daughters Malea and Brynlee and many Nesheim cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Disabled American Veterans in Bruce’s honor.
