Holten: The secret to happiness
I’ve discovered the secret to happiness. It’s a creek. That’s right, a creek that’s full of fresh rainwater with some trees and buttes in the background and lush green grass on both sides that glistens when the sun rises and glows when the sun sets.

Holten: The shopping cart before the horse
I’m not much of a shopper. In fact, I hate shopping. Typically my “shopping trips” last about as long as it takes to screw in a light bulb, start a new lawnmower or remove a bathing suit.

Revisiting history
Though Medora has the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame and a scenic backdrop, there hasn’t been a sanctioned rodeo there in nearly 40 years. It has been since the late 70s since an official rodeo has taken place in Medora.

Holten: What’s the lasting oil boom legacy?
Let’s say that you’re a farmer who owns a cow and someone comes along and says they would love to take ole Bessie off your hands. Do you give her to them or do you sell her to them?

Holten: No more worries for me
I’ve decided to give up something for Lent, even though it’s not the season. That something is “worry.” I’m not going to worry anymore. Worry doesn’t do any good, so why worry about it?

Holten: Slow down, partner
You know what our problem is? We think only in terms of “steps.” But life really isn’t about steps. It’s about the next step. Forget the “s.”

Holten: Life's little reminders
Do you ever get little mental reminders? You know, just something that pops into your head and reminds you of a past event, a loved one you knew and lost or a friend who passed away last year, 10 years ago or maybe 20. I do all the time. I’m just not sure where they come from.

Holten: Whatcha gonna do in heaven?
Have you ever thought about what you’re going to do when you get to heaven? Probably not. Because if you think about heaven, then you’ve got to think about death and all the bad things you’ve done and we’ve all done plenty of bad things.

Three or more topics in one
There’s no rule against writing about more than one topic in a column, is there? If there is, fine me, make me jog in the fast lane of a Los Angeles freeway or throw me in a bowl of wood ticks because life is too short. I can’t possibly write about everything I want to in that span, so I need to expand my topics, at least this once.

Do you have trouble earning respect? Don’t feel bad because I know something that has an even tougher time and it does a whole lot more than you, me, Bob the milkman, Ed the dentist, House Speaker John Boehner, John Kerry, LeAnn Rimes and Joe Biden, the oldest man ever, combined.
