Fiscal cliff: How to judge if debt cuts are real
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and leaders of the lame-duck Congress may be just weeks away from shaking hands on a deal to avert the dreaded “fiscal cliff.” So it’s natural to wonder: If they announce a bipartisan package promising to curb mushrooming federal deficits, will it be real?

Save national parks from a fiscal cliff
We are getting perilously close to the metaphoric ledge called the “fiscal cliff.” Also called “sequester,” the fiscal cliff is a disastrous mix of expiring tax cuts — from both the Bush and Obama eras — and dramatic across-the-board spending cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs.

'Fiscal cliff' a dangerous dive for North Dakota: State ranks No. 6 in the nation for the impact of tax hikes
FARGO — A North Dakota family of four earning $84,896 could pay $4,825 more in taxes in 2013 than they did in 2011 if Congress and President Barack Obama take the nation into a running leap off the so-called “fiscal cliff.”

What you eat can kill you
I’m not much of a sweets eater. Nor do I eat a lot of high-cholesterol foods that’ll clog me up and kill me. Not because I’m a super-disciplined eater but because I don’t really like them. It’s just the luck of the draw. Both of my grandfathers set the tone by eating for nourishment rather than fun or to satisfy a craving, to relieve boredom or as part of a “dining experience.”

Harvest time is hunting time
A little over a year ago on a random early fall hunting trip, I pulled over to the side of the road near a wildlife management area and surveyed the scene, assessing the ground and field conditions. While summer 2011 seemed like the wettest I’ve ever seen, by fall, things were starting to dry out to the point where you could pull into an approach or shallow ditch to park for a walk after pheasants or grouse and not worry about getting stuck.
