LEAD, S.D. (AP) — Nestled nearly 5,000 feet beneath the earth in the gold boom town of Lead, S.D., is a laboratory that could help scientists answer some pretty heavy questions about life, its origins and the universe.
BISMARCK — Two North Dakota organizations are threatening to sue if Public Service Commissioners Kevin Cramer and Brian Kalk don’t remove themselves from making decisions about the South Heart Coal mining permit application.
Kalk said the notice of intent to file a lawsuit “has no basis in fact and is nothing more than a political attack.”
North Dakota has more than 7,000 miles of underground oil and gas pipeline, and requests from state and federal agencies to dig are sent in weekly. However, they cannot be seen on any state map, and no one knows exactly how far they stretch, officials said Friday.
Dakota Resource Council Director Mark Trechock has spent 18 years helping people find solutions to community problems, particularly in the energy and agricultural industry. While he will miss it, he said it’s time close that door of his life and open a different one.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation has issued a travel alert for southwest North Dakota due to continuous ice on roadways creating hazardous travel conditions, according to a press release. Cities and surrounding areas in the travel alert include Belfield, Dickinson, Grassy Butte and Killdeer.
