With TransCanada’s plans to build an international pipeline to bring Canada’s heavy tar sands oil to Texas refineries under U.S. State Department review, now is not the best time for another pipeline to rupture — not that there ever is a good time.
In a session already distinguished for thumbing its collective nose at voters, the North Dakota Legislature’s dismantling of a good animal abuse/cruelty bill is especially egregious. The bill that easily cleared the Senate called for upping penalties for specific categories of animal abuse; it has been gutted by the House.

As the Legislature pushes new DUI legislation through the legislative meat grinder, this much is apparent: DUI laws will not be significantly toughened this session, despite the tragedies DUI traffic accidents visit on North Dakota families every day.
In the age of “The Biggest Loser,” smartphone health care apps and diet pills guaranteed to burn the belly flab away, how is it possible that our once lean, mean nation has fallen prey to an obesity epidemic?
On Wednesday, the state’s House of Representatives committed a shameful act against the good people of North Dakota by voting to pass an amended version of Senate Bill 2310. Its aim: to limit the information on law enforcement accident reports available to the public.
If there is one thing we will never have a shortage of in North Dakota, it is space. Regardless of a population boom threatening to double the size of towns, there is still plenty of space out here on the Western Edge.
