HETTINGER — In a meeting with nearly 100 farmers and ranchers from here to Lemmon, S.D., the U.S. Forest Service on Saturday claimed responsibility for the Pautre Fire that scorched thousands of acres of grassland between Wednesday and Friday.
As several yellow-clad prescribed fire specialists walked the lands of Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s South Unit, some sprayed patches of water while others left trails of fire in the first day of a prescribed burn Thursday afternoon.
The county-wide burn ban that was placed on Stark County on April 1, 2008, has been lifted. Stark County Emergency Manager Gary Kostelecky reported yesterday morning that open burning is now allowed in Stark County.
How does a national park conduct a controlled prescribed burn when the county in which it exists has a burning ban due to ongoing drought conditions?
