Medora is a hopping place this weekend and that’s just the way Harold Schafer would have wanted it. This weekend features the opening days of the 2013 Medora Musical, the town’s first sanctioned rodeo in nearly four decades and, to wrap up the weekend, the Sunday premiere of a much-anticipated documentary about Schafer’s life.
BISMARCK — Medora Mayor Doug Ellison says all indicators point to a good tourism season this summer. Since Memorial Day, the unofficial summer kickoff weekend, he said the number of visitors through the small western town that boasts the Medora Musical and historic old-west look, has been steady, and that’s with many rainy days and two weeks before the musical was set to open Friday night.
Though Medora has the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame and a scenic backdrop, there hasn’t been a sanctioned rodeo there in nearly 40 years.
It has been since the late 70s since an official rodeo has taken place in Medora.

But North Dakota University System spokeswoman Linda Donlin said that executive session is a regular part of the board’s two-day annual retreat, which this year also will include two training sessions.
MEDORA — Looking back at the rocky cliffs outlining the northern edge of town after glancing at an 1884 photo taken outside of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Chuck and Laurinda Warczak didn’t notice much difference.
