CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The U.S. Department of Interior is cutting federal mineral payments to 35 states by about $110 million this fiscal year as part of the automatic federal spending cuts that started this month.
An oil and gas lease sale at the state Capitol Wednesday raked in about $158 million, doubling in size from a sale six months ago, with McKenzie County leases yielding the second highest total — about $43 million.
BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota’s top rock researcher and the state’s chief fossil finder have spent decades exposed to an asbestos-like mineral found in western North Dakota that is similar to a kind linked to cancer in lab rats and in people in Turkey.
Since 2003, landowners who own the surface rights to their property, but not the mineral rights, have had the right to claim any minerals rights deemed abandoned if nothing has been done with them for 20 years.
