ABOARD THE USS NIMITZ (AP) — Some 100 nautical miles northeast of Oahu in the Pacific Ocean, a fleet of U.S. Navy fighter jets slings from the deck of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, leaving thin trails of smoke on the tight runway.
Two USS North Dakota crew members gave a presentation to the public Thursday at the Ramada Grand Dakota Lodge. They answered questions regarding the Virginia-class nuclear submarine being built in Groton, Conn., that is expected to travel the world.
The long-standing ban on stationing female sailors in submarines is about to become a thing of the past. This week the Pentagon sent a letter to lawmakers telling them of this change in Navy policy adding that the first female officers will probably start appearing on nuclear submarines by early next year.
