FARGO (AP) — A federal judge has relegated the political fight over the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux to the history books, but supporters of the retired moniker say they won’t back down.
FARGO — North Dakota’s flagship university dropped its contentious Fighting Sioux nickname for the third time Thursday, and officials expressed hope that the latest retirement — fueled by this week’s overwhelming statewide vote — would finally stick.
GRAND FORKS — People working to persuade North Dakota voters to allow retirement of University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname next month say they’re encouraged by poll results released Wednesday showing their side with an edge among likely voters.
GRAND FORKS — A month before the electoral showdown over the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname, a new statewide poll shows likely voters inclined toward allowing the university to retire the historic name and logo.
FARGO (AP) — An attorney for an American Indian group suing the NCAA in hopes of saving the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname said Thursday that a 2007 settlement should be thrown out so namesake tribes can be heard.
GRAND FORKS — As expected, the NCAA has asked a federal court to toss the lawsuit brought against the association by Sioux Indians who support the University of North Dakota retaining its Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.
GRAND FORKS – Fighting Sioux nickname supporters from the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe said they will file petition forms and affidavits of committee members with the secretary of state’s office today to refer to voters recent legislative action aimed at the nickname’s retirement.
GRAND FORKS — As part of the University of North Dakota’s effort to transition away from the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, a senior UND athletics official has circulated an email to officials of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and other conferences, advising them that UND will discontinue using the name and logo as of Jan. 1.
In the end, the decision came with a shrug and a sigh.
The Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, cherished symbols of UND athletic teams for nearly 80 years, must be consigned to history, the State Board of Higher Education ruled Thursday.
