FARGO — It was January 2011 when Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said it was University of North Dakota officials, not the league, who asked that retirement of the Fighting Sioux moniker be required for league membership.
FARGO — A group of University of North Dakota athletic coaches say the embattled Fighting Sioux nickname and logo will hurt their ability to recruit, damage relationships with other schools and limit opportunities for student athletes until it is retired.
As the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux hockey team heads back to St. Paul for the NCAA tournament this weekend, two extra “referees” will be watching: the NCAA itself, which has banned the beleaguered nickname and logo from tournament play, and the state of North Dakota, which by law requires that the team be known as the Fighting Sioux.

Thursday’s announcement that the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname will be retired after a four-year legal battle has evoked a wide range of reactions from people all across the state, including Dickinson.
