Political opposition of ND voting process inaccurate

It has been suggested by a political party partisan that promoting voter turnout is one of the duties of the secretary of state. However, I believe the responsibility for voter turnout is a function of candidates, political parties, and proponents and opponents of measures.

Under state law, the duty of the secretary of state is to work with county election officials to ensure elections are well run. So, how are we doing? According to the Pew Charitable Trust, they ranked North Dakota No. 1 in the nation for election administration for the 2008, 2010 and 2012 election cycles.

In addition, state and county election officials work diligently to educate the public on the process of voting. An example is the Voting in North Dakota Easy as Pie education campaign in partnership with the North Dakota Association of Counties.

Also, a comprehensive election website is available at As election day draws near and the ballot is finalized, the website will have information on polling locations, times, sample ballots, voting options, measures, campaign finance and virtually everything a voter will need to know to exercise his or her right to vote on Nov. 4.
