Midgets take 9-0 win in opener

It didn't take a psychic to predict the end result between West Region power Dickinson High School and bottom-feeder Minot Ryan in boys tennis action Friday at the Dickinson High School tennis courts.

The Midgets lost just six games in singles play en route to a 9-0 victory over Ryan in both teams' season opener.

"It was fine for a first match," Dickinson assistant coach Larry Dockter said. "We're one of the stronger teams in the West Region and they're one of the weaker teams."

Varsity newcomer Kyle Rummel was impressive in his debut. He triumphed over Ryan's Nathan Krueger 6-0 in straight sets at the No. 6 singles spot.

"He's a new kid filling in on varsity," Dockter said. "I was impressed with him. He really played well."

Playing a lesser team allows a coaching staff to mix things up and Dickinson didn't waste the opportunity.

Junior Taylor Bruhschwein and doubles teammate Stephan Blanchard were state runners-up a year ago. However, playing a weaker opponent, Dockter decided to switch things up.

"We split them up to get some of the other guys in there," Dockter said. "Tennis is a little different than most sports. You have to worry about what to do for team and individual."

Dockter said opportunities to find different combinations aren't going to come along very often, thanks to a grueling West Region schedule.

"There are about five teams in the (West Region) mix and a lot of teams are putting us and (Bismarck) Century at the top," he said. "Williston, Bismarck (High) and Minot are going to be tough. We're all competing for four spots."

Bruhschwein toppled Ryan's Jon Bahl 6-0 in straight sets at the top spot and Blanchard topped Alex Bahl 6-0, 6-2 at the second spot. Luke Van Ells (No. 3), Jesse Freidt (No. 4) and Colin Peterson (No. 5) also collected wins in singles play.

In doubles competition, the Midgets nearly ran the table in not just sets, but games. The Midgets won 6-0 in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. Rummel and Tony Hanes defeated Krueger and Matt Meyer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles to polish off the shutout.

"We have a lot of new guys," first-year Ryan coach Andrew Evanoff said. "The scores were closer than indicated. We had early-season jitters. We have to get back into the swing of things."

Dickinson will travel to Jamestown on Monday. The Blue Jays are a new addition to the West Region.

"We've never played them," Dockter said. "I don't know what to expect."
