Burn ban guidelines are released

DICKINSON - Dickinson Volunteer Fire Chief Bob Sivak and Stark County Emergency Manager Gary Kostelecky have released a fact sheet for the countywide total burn ban that is in effect.

The burn ban prohibits open burning of any kind within Stark County, including the city of Dickinson.

The press release stated the following:

Receiving some rain or snow does not mean the ban is lifted. An adequate amount of moisture must be received in order to change the ban.

-Open burning is defined as burning of materials wherein products of combustion are emitted directly into the air without passing through a stack or chimney from an enclosed chamber.

-Open burning is not allowed within the city of Dickinson.

It goes on to say that during the current total burn ban:

-Natural gas and propane grills are allowed, so long as they are used correctly and on a flat surface.

-Charcoal grills are not allowed during a total burn ban due to the possibility of ash or embers being carried by the wind and igniting a fire.

-Chimineas and fire pits are not to be used within city limits during a total burn ban.

Sivak and Kostelecky said Stark County residents are still allowed to use indoor fire places and wood burners. They also said these guidelines apply to residents in the city of Dickinson.

Sivak said Dickinson residents have continued to comply with the total burn ban.

"The cooperation with the Dickinson citizens has been amazing," Sivak said.

He asked people to continue to refrain from burning until further notice.

"Just ride this out with us and don't do it," Sivak said.

The press release also outlined these guidelines to follow when there is not a burn ban in place:

-At any time, charcoal grills should not be left unattended, and should be extinguished using water or by covering it with an approved cover to smother the coals. Charcoal grills should never be used on a combustible surface.

-When there is not a burn ban in place, chimineas and commercially purchased fire pits may be used, provided they are used properly, and the flame does not exceed 3 feet in width and 2 feet in height. They must be equipped with a screen or spark arrestor. Proper clearance to combustibles must be maintained. A fire extinguisher or water should be kept near the fire in the event of an accident.

-At all times, fires should not be left unattended whether it is produced by a grill, chiminea or fire pit. All fires should be completely extinguished when not being used.

-Smoking materials should be extinguished before discarding. They should be discarded properly and not thrown out into the open where they may ignite combustibles.
