1 killed, sheriff injured in interstate crash

HILLSBORO (AP) -- A semi veered into a sheriff's vehicle trying to help a stuck car in blizzard conditions on Interstate 29, killing one of two women who had been in the car and injuring the sheriff, authorities say.

The name of the 20-year-old woman, from Watertown, S.D., was not immediately released. Highway Patrol Capt. Jim Prochniak said she was dead at the scene of the crash about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, about eight miles north of Hillsboro.

"Another semi came along, lost control and hit the sheriff's vehicle," Prochniak said. The woman was standing outside the vehicle, he said.

Traill County Sheriff Mike Crocker was taken to a Fargo hospital but his injuries are not considered life-threatening, Prochniak said. Another officer with Crocker, Hillsboro Police Officer Laverne Aventi, was not injured.
