Former Press sports editor pleads not guilty on sex charges

BISMARCK -- The former sports editor for The Dickinson Press has pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted human trafficking.

Bobby Abplanalp, 29, was arrested June 14 in Bismarck and charged with the Class A felony that carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Abplanalp appeared Monday before South Central District Judge Donald Jorgensen during his first court appearance and waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Abplanalp will stand trial Sept. 9 at 8:45 a.m.

The criminal complaint alleges Abplanalp attempted to obtain another person for sex, knowing that person was under 18 and would be subject to human trafficking.

Another man, Aaron S. Collins of Tioga, was arrested the same day and charged with the same crime. He pleaded not guilty in July.

Abplanalp will remain under custody of the Burleigh County Sheriff until bond is paid or his hearing.

Abplanalp's attorney, Robert Quick, said the case is premature and wouldn't comment.
