California style in North Dakota: BREA opens Dickinson location

After finding cute, affordable clothes in the small town of Brea, Calif., while attending grad school, Dr. Eve Kostelecky knew she could bring the same type of fashion to her home state of North Dakota.

0 Talk about it

Several years later, Kostecky recently opened up her second BREA location in Dickinson, about a year and a half after opening a store in Mandan.

“It had kind of been on the back burner for quite some time,” Kostecky said.

The boutique sells women’s apparel — everything from stylish coats and boots to yoga pants and fleece-lined leggings for winter time.

Kostelecky opened BREA’s Dickinson location on Oct. 11 at the urging of her family who lives here.

“My dad’s from Dickinson and I have family in Dickinson and they kept — they were pretty persistent in saying, ‘Hey, we think that Dickinson could use a store like BREA,’” Kostelecky said.

The store is located in an old house on Third Avenue West.

They altered the layout and found hardwood floors beneath the carpet, Kostelecky said.

“The fact that it’s a little different and it is in a house just kind of adds to the character of what you’d expect out of a boutique,” Kostelecky said.

BREA is open two days a week — Friday and Saturday in Dickinson and Thursday and Saturday in Mandan — which started because it worked around the optometrist’s schedule.

“When I had my little boy, I started to take Thursdays off,” Kostelecky said. “Thursdays and Saturdays were the days that I could be available for emergencies.”

Her mother is helping out with the Dickinson store, and was available Friday and Saturday to keep the tradition going.

Kostelecky feels the two days a week adds to the mystique and unique nature of BREA’s inventory.

“It kind of makes customers be like, ‘OK, they’re open two days a week. If I really want something that I see on Facebook, I’ve got to make sure that I get in right away,’” Kostelecky said.

Some of Kostelecky’s favorite items are boots, skinny jeans and coats.

“We try to keep things pretty unique so everyone’s not wearing the same thing,” Kostelecky said. “We want people to feel like when they come get clothing at our store that the whole town’s not going to be wearing the same outfit.”

While she’s opened two stores in less than two years, world domination is not Kostelecky’s end goal.

“We’re always open to the opportunity,” Kostelecky said. “The challenge of opening a new business really is fun for us."
