Downtown dream: Celebrations ‘n Crafts art gallery and supply store open Thursday in Dickinson

Press Photos by Katherine Grandstrand Josh Hardin, left and Amanda Galster, the co-curators of Celebrations ‘n’ Crafts in downtown Dickinson, stands in the store and art gallery on March 27. Celebrations ‘n’ Crafts opens Thursday.

Separately, Amanda Galster and Josh Hardin have always wanted to open their own business.

Their dream will officially come true together on Thursday when they open the doors of Celebration ‘n’ Crafts in downtown Dickinson.

The gallery and store will feature the work of local artists and artisans with pottery, paintings, hand-made body care and jewelry. They will also feature professional grade art and craft supplies, a service some local artists have been lacking.

The couple said they saw a need in the community and decided to fill it.

“We both have passion for the arts, and have forever,” Hardin said. “Arts and craft, not just paintings, all kinds of things. And we noticed that Dickinson doesn’t have anything for it.”

When they were first brainstorming the idea, they weren’t sure what the art community was like in Dickinson.

“There’s so many artists in the woodworks in town here that we want to help bring them out and get their art up and just show how talented people are,” Galster said.

There are a number of Dickinson State University faculty members who have shown interest and even submitted pieces to be sold at the gallery.

In addition to being the curators of the gallery, their own work is displayed. Galster makes jewelry and scarves and Hardin has built many of the displays.

Each month, a different artist will be featured in a prominent spot in the shop, and will be invited to create for a day during that month.

The couple has gotten experience hosting art shows at their full-time jobs at The BrickHouse Grille.

The space used to hold the Pride of Dakota store Local Charm and was empty when the couple began to renovate, making it a little easier.

“We had basically a blank canvas,” Hardin said. “You’ve got these huge walls and this high ceiling.”

Downtown was the only location for the gallery. Had they not found their location, they would have held out a little longer for another downtown storefront.

“With all the little boutiques and everything opening up in downtown Dickinson, it’s going to be a good fit,” Hardin said.

The couple is all about downtown. In addition to owning a business, they live downtown and work downtown at The BrickHouse Grille.

“We would love to see it just like in the bigger cities,” Galster said. “Have more people downtown, more hustle and bustle.”

Other downtown business have been excited for Celebrations ‘n’ Crafts to open and have been very supportive, Hardin said.

“So far, actually, everyone we have talked to downtown seems like the want to help,” Hardin said. “They want to grow the downtown as a whole, so every new business they’re excited about and we’re just excited to be a part of it as well.”
