DSU deliberates over 3 dean candidates

Dickinson State University is reviewing its three candidates for the dean of students after public forums wrapped up Monday.

Wartburg College’s Center of Community Engagement director Daniel Kittle spoke before university students, staff and alumni Monday. Howard Payne University dean of students Brent Marsh and North Park University dean of diversity and intercultural programs Terry Lindsay each held a forum last week.

A final decision for the position will be made by the beginning of the fall semester, “if not sooner,” said DSU communications director Mark Billings.

“Since we had the last candidate, I know our president (D.C. Coston) has personally asked opinions of nearly three dozen people,” he said.

The dean of students will be expected to enhance student engagement and expand the university’s reach for it student base, from local to more state and national.

Billings said each of the three experienced candidates “add some new expertise” to the role which has been held by interim vice president of student development Pattie Carr since 2012.

Carr will begin as assistant professor of fine and performing arts, and health and physical education at the university this fall.
