13-year-old student dies on Wahpeton Indian school campus

WAHPETON, N.D. –  A student reportedly died on a boarding school campus here earlier this week.

The Circle of Nations School confirmed Wednesday, Feb. 7, that a 13-year-old girl was found dead at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, according to Brian Watson, dean of students.

"The Circle of Nations School community suffered a tragic loss,” read a statement provided by the school. “It's difficult for all of us to face the death of a young person.”

The statement added that during the crisis situation, the school will provide grief support to students and staff by bringing in counselors.

“During crises situations such as this, providing support to our students and staff is our primary priority,” the statement read.

No additional information on the cause of death was available, but the school stated there is an ongoing investigation.

The school, 832 8th St. N., is an off-reservation boarding school for American Indian youth in grades four through eight, according to its website.
