Wirkus’ vehicle hit the left rear axle of Pemberton’s trailer and continued into the west ditch with extensive damage.

Pemberton, 57, was able to come safely to a stop in the right turn-lane into Falkirk off the southbound road.

Both men were taken from the scene by the Washburn Fire Department Crash/Rescue Squad to local hospitals.

North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Sgt. Daniel Haugen said it’s unclear what caused Wirkus, 34, to cross over the median toward oncoming traffic.

There are pending charges against Wirkus.
