Police Blotter: No ‘foul play’ in man’s death at local motel

Officers say the death of a man found at the Oasis Motel in Dickinson on Thursday is not suspicious.

Wendell Winfree, 46, and Claude Mercier, 24 arrived in town a couple of weeks ago after walking away from a low-security penitentiary in Bismarck, where they were serving sentences.

Officers had not been specifically looking for them, Dickinson Police Sgt. Kylan Klauzer said.

The two were at the hotel with Dena Koester, of Amarillo, Texas, when Mercier called police to report that Winfree was unresponsive.

Autopsy reports are pending, but Klauzer said officers don’t believe there was any sort of foul play.

While responding to the call, officers found Koester in possession of marijuana. She was arrested and faces charges of possession of an unlawful substance. A Bismarck penitentiary warrant was served on Mercier.

Moorhead man responsible for string of thefts arrested

Officers arrested a man after witnesses saw him steal a woman’s purse from her car at the T-Rex Conoco Thursday morning.

The woman had stepped away from her vehicle when it was at a gas pump. When she returned, her purse was missing. Witnesses said Timothy Flick of Moorhead, Minn., took the purse from the vehicle and drove off.

One of the witnesses followed Flick and took down his driver’s license, which led officers to locate the vehicle near the 1700 block of the east Interstate 94 Business Loop.

Flick, 30, had the purse in his possession, as well as a number of other stolen items from as far away as Fargo. All of the thefts are believed to have occurred earlier on the day of the incident, Dickinson Police Sgt. Kylan Klauzer said.

Flick was arrested and charged with unlawful entry in a motor vehicle and theft of property.
