Roughrider Electric scammer claiming customers owe money

HAZEN — Roughrider Electric Cooperative is warning its members about a scam trying to get money.

The Hazen-based company said a customer reported a caller claiming to be a Roughrider Electric representative. The caller said the customer owed approximately $600 on her electric bill. She almost gave the caller her card information when the “representative” requested a money order. The caller gave her a name and phone number to call back once she got the money order. When the customer called Roughrider Electric, representatives told her she did not owe that much on her bill, according to a website posting.

Customers should be aware of the scam and not send money to the address given. If possible, customers should try to get the number of the person calling and report it to the cooperative.
