Abplanalp was arrested and charged with attempted human trafficking in June 2013 during a Bismarck Police Department sting. He had previously agreed to meet a minor at a hotel and pay for sex. In September 2013, he plead guilty and was charged in federal court with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and was released to the Bismarck Transition Center. On Tuesday, the Bismarck Transition Center — where Abplanalp was living — confiscated his cellphone, which contained photos of nude females, messages pertaining to prostitution, and evidence of violations to the facility's rules and regulations. Condoms, notes with hotel and name information, a U.S. Bank debit card and a Visa debit card were confiscated at his place of employment — most of which are violations of the transition center's rules, according to U.S. District Court documents.
In May, Abplanalp had been ordered by the court to submit to a psychological evaluation.
