Former Press sports editor arrested for violating terms of release
BISMARCK — Bobby Abplanalp, the former sports editor of The Dickinson Press, was arrested Wednesday for violating terms of his release.
Abplanalp was arrested and charged with attempted human trafficking in June 2013 during a Bismarck Police Department sting. He had previously agreed to meet a minor at a hotel and pay for sex. In September 2013, he plead guilty and was charged in federal court with attempted coercion and enticement of a minor and was released to the Bismarck Transition Center. On Tuesday, the Bismarck Transition Center — where Abplanalp was living — confiscated his cellphone, which contained photos of nude females, messages pertaining to prostitution, and evidence of violations to the facility's rules and regulations. Condoms, notes with hotel and name information, a U.S. Bank debit card and a Visa debit card were confiscated at his place of employment — most of which are violations of the transition center's rules, according to U.S. District Court documents. In May, Abplanalp had been ordered by the court to submit to a psychological evaluation.
