Jason Jost, 33, of Brooten, Minn., was injured early Thursday when the pickup he was driving collided with a southbound BNSF Railway train along 32nd Avenue South at Grand Forks’ western city limits.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol said Jost was eastbound on 32nd Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. when his pickup apparently crashed through a crossing guard and struck the side of the train.

“It hit further back on the cars. It wasn’t near the engine area,” Sgt. Greg Smith said. “The train didn’t stop. They may not even have been aware of it.”

After impact, the 2003 Ford F-250 pickup rotated about 180 degrees and came to rest on the west side of the railroad tracks.

Jost was in serious condition as of Friday afternoon, according to an Altru Hospital spokeswoman.

Jost has been charged with driving under the influence, driving without liability insurance and failure to yield at a railroad crossing, Smith said.
