GRAND FORKS — A Thompson man convicted last year of child neglect was arrested Wednesday after sheriff’s deputies found items associated with a meth lab in his garage during a probation search, according to the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department.

James Davis Hume, 33, was not home when agents of the Grand Forks Narcotics Task Force and sheriff’s deputies searched the house Wednesday morning.

A 14-year-old girl was babysitting a 4-year-old at the home, the department said. Agents contacted Amanda Lee Rocha, 32, who also lived at the house, and requested she come home.

Agents found meth-related items in the garage, authorities said. They also learned from local drugstores that over the course of about eight months, Rocha and Hume bought large amounts of cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient in manufacturing meth, the department said.

The children were placed in the custody of Grand Forks County Social Services, and Rocha was arrested on suspicion of child neglect and booked into the county jail.

Officers arrested Hume on suspicion of manufacturing meth, child neglect and possession of drug paraphernalia.
