Counterfeit bills circulating in Grand Forks, police warn

GRAND FORKS -- Grand Forks police said a rash of counterfeit cash is making the rounds at local businesses.

The department posted a photo of the bills on Facebook and circled the biggest clue that the money is fake -- “Motion Picture Use Only” is stamped across the back and in the top right corner on the front.

Police Lt. Derik Zimmel said there are variations of the bills and others may have Chinese symbols printed on them.

The bills are about the same size as real money, he said, but likely feel different.

“The problem is when people are accepting cash there’s a natural tendency to just glance at the value,” Zimmel said. Police are encouraging people to look closely at the cash they’re handed to make sure it’s authentic.

“You don’t have to be a currency expert to look down and take two seconds to glance at the bill and realize it’s fake,” he said.
