Two new assistant principals in Dickinson schools

Dickinson High School will have a new assistant principal for the 2014-15 school year.

The Dickinson Public School Board is expected to approve Thomas Barr at its executive meeting in August. He replaces Calvin Dean, who took a position as superintendent of South Heart Public Schools.

Barr was previously employed as a 6-8 grade middle school principal and director of curriculum for the Pekin Community School District in Packwood, Iowa.

DPS human resources administrative assistant Cyndee Egeness estimated about eight people applied for the job. Barr interviewed in late July and was hired shortly after.

DHS isn’t the only school to get a new assistant principal. Hagen Junior High will have its first assistant principal in years, officials said.

Casaundra Francis, a former teacher on special assignment at Gililland Middle School in Tempe, Ariz., was hired in April, Egeness said.

She said that with “growing enrollment and everything getting busy,” the school needed to bring in an assistant principal again.

Enrollment at Hagen at the end of the 2014 spring semester was 459 students, slightly up from 451 at the beginning of the school year.

A total of 3,219 students were enrolled in the district as of May 22.
