Accident closes Highway 85 on Sunday

Highway 85 was much of Sunday after a morning rollover crash involving a flammable petroleum fuel being spilled on the road.

A 64-year-old Colorado man lost control of the semi he was driving after failing to negotiate an icy stretch of Highway 85 south of Belfield, about 2 miles south of the Slope/Stark county line, just before 8:30 a.m., according to a North Dakota Highway Patrol release.

While en route to the Oil Patch from Denver, Paul Gorham told authorities a short rain shower came through the area at the time of the crash, causing the roadway to become temporarily icy. Gorham, who was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson, was not cited.

Northbound and southbound lanes were closed to traffic for several hours after the crash. The highway reopened at 5:30 p.m., according to the release.
