SOUTH HEART — There was a break-in early Friday morning at the Farmer’s Daughter cafe here, Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy said.

The incident is still under investigation and an inventory has yet to be completed, but Tuhy said the Stark County Sheriff’s Office knew some coins were missing and some food had been taken from the freezers.

Surveillance footage of the incident was captured and will be reviewed by investigators.

Cafe owner Mary Hodell said the break-in occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. and that the intruders trashed an office area inside the restaurant and broke into a safe. Hodell also said some meat appeared to have been missing and that coolers and freezers were left open, spoiling much of the establishment’s food.

Closed over the holidays and this month, partly because she recently had foot surgery, Hodell said she had planned to re-open the cafe Feb. 3, although that date could be pushed back because of repairs needed following the break-in.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 701-456-7610.
