Flood advisory issued for Adams, Grant and Hettinger counties
Three southwest North Dakota countries are in a flood advisory, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologists in Bismarck issued the advisory for Adams, Grant and Hettinger counties Saturday afternoon. Radar indicated that heavy rain -- estimated at 2 to 4 inches -- has fallen in the counties. There is a possibility for more rain tonight, officials said in a release.
Law enforcement reported 3 to 6 inches of water flowing over Highway 49 south of New Leipzig between milemarkers 22 and 25, according to the release.
Runoff from this excessive rainfall may cause minor flooding. Additional water covering roads is also possible, especially in low-lying area or new creeks and streams.
The advisory expires at 11 p.m. MDT.
The NWS warned drivers to be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross bridges, dips or other low spots if covered with water, and never try to cross a flowing stream on foot or in a vehicle.
