Rauschenberger appointed North Dakota tax commissioner

BISMARCK – North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple today appointed Ryan Rauschenberger as the state’s tax commissioner, a position that oversees 134 employees and administers 35 different state taxes.

Rauschenberger, a certified public accountant, has been the state’s deputy tax commissioner since 2009. He led the agency’s policy analysis and tax research team;  assisted the tax commissioner in overseeing all areas of tax administration; conducted public outreach to educate business leaders and other citizens about the application of taxes and assisted legislators regarding state tax policy.

He replaces outgoing Commissioner Cory Fong, who announced in early October that he would be leaving state government for a position with Bismarck-based advertising, marketing and public relations firm Odney. His last day on the job will be Dec. 31.

Fong has said that his decision to leave the tax commissioner’s position was based on opportunity, saying the position with Odney wouldn’t have existed in a year’s time when he would have completed his elected term.

Rauschenberger will serve out the remainder of Fong’s term, which is up for election in November next year.

“Ryan’s proven leadership and his expertise involving all aspects of state tax policy make him a clear choice to lead the department,” Gov. Dalrymple said in a news release.

Prior to joining the Office of State Tax Commissioner, Rauschenberger worked at the North Dakota Department of Commerce and the Minneapolis office of accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Rauschenberger earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
