Kee Leigh Chase is the third bicyclist this year to be fatally hit on North Dakota roads. The accident occurred four days after Portland triathlete Lisa Knudson was rear-ended while bicycling on state Highway 200 outside Finley.

Ronald Mackinnon, 72, of Rolla, was driving a Chevrolet Colorado west on U.S. Highway 281 around 6:25 p.m. Tuesday when Kee Leigh rode across the highway, the patrol said.

Mackinnon was checking his rear-view mirror and could not avoid the girl by the time he saw her, the patrol said.

Medical responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
