Hoeven to deliver Washington’s Farewell Address
WASHINGTON — A U.S. senator from North Dakota will deliver George Washington’s Farewell Address.
Republican Sen. John Hoeven will present the speech Monday at 3 p.m. ET in Washington. The letter written by the first president of the U.S. was scribed near the end of Washington’s second term.
The tradition of reciting the farewell address began during the Civil War to boost moral and has since grown into a yearly reminder of Washington setting a precedent for a two-year presidency.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt won a fourth term before dying in office, which prompted the 22nd Amendment — which limits presidencies to two terms — to be ratified into the U.S. Constitution in 1951.
Hoeven will be the third senator from North Dakota to give the address. The event airs on C-SPAN 2.
