Cops: Dog dispute led to brutal assault in Watford City

WATFORD CITY, N.D. -- A 28-year-old man was ordered held on $100,000 bond Monday after police say he attacked another man who was also walking his dog after their animals got in a nipping match Friday, July 6, in Watford City.

A Watford City police officer spotted Cody Lemieux punching another man multiple times around 12:14 a.m. Friday, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Northwest District Court. When the officer turned on his lights and sirens, Lemieux ran away and the officer was unable to to find him. The man who had been assaulted told officers that he was walking his dog when another dog started nipping at his dog. He said he walked away, but that Lemieux walked up to him and started to punch him.

The man’s nose was broken, he had bruises and swelling on his cheek and elbow and lost a tooth, police wrote in court records.

Other officers found Lemieux several blocks away, and Lemieux tried to prevent them from arresting him by pulling his arms away while they were trying to handcuff him, police said.

Lemieux is due back in court on Sept. 13 for a preliminary hearing.
