Bernhardt

Georgene Lou (Gullickson) Bernhardt, 83, of Beaverton, OR, died peacefully Jan. 24, 2018. Georgene's deep faith in God firmly grounded her life of service and love. She was born, the youngest of nine children, to Louis and Clara (Knudson) Gullickson on Dec. 17, 1934 in Taylor, ND. In 1952, at age 17, Georgene was joined in marriage to Leonard Bernhardt. After Leonard's service in the Korean War they put all of their belongings into their 1954 Ford and traveled to Portland to begin building their life together.

Georgene was the proud mother of five children, grandmother of 22 and great-grandmother of 12. The kitchen was the heart of her home with countless meals and baked goods being served. Georgene loved making every holiday special in her home. Christmas was truly magical for her children and grandchildren. While raising five children, she also managed to be of great support in building the family business. Georgene's family was blessed with her endless support and unconditional love.

Georgene was a woman of compassion. Her generous acts benefited needy adults and children both locally and around the world. She contributed and procured necessary supplies, usually delivering them herself to recipients in Romania, Vietnam, Mongolia and India, as well as local homeless facilities and migrant camps. Georgene worked independently as well as with organizations including Medical Teams Intl, Holt Intl Children's Services, Heart of Hope Ministries Intl and Christina Noble Foundation. She was also an active member of St. Cecilia Parish for over 60 years, participating in many volunteer roles. We thank Georgene for her advocacy on behalf of people in need and her inspiration that one person can truly make a difference.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Leonard, children Douglas (Karen), Darnell (Raimond) Adgers, Donna Wright, Dannette Liebreich, and Darryl (Lori); grandchildren Jeremia, Justine, Jolette, Jordan, Jarrett, Jaylynn, Jaymin, Blaine, Stacy, Christine, Cameron, Rachel, Austin, Spencer, Benjamin, Madeline, Samantha, Blake, Corynn, Andrew, Nicole, and Tanner; great-grandchildren Isabelle, Kenzi, Aidan, Emma, Jillian, Jonah, Oliver, Cole, Addison, Collin, Nolan and Leo. Survivors also include sisters, Edna Irwin, Evelyn Hermann and Blanche Naumann. She was also a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Elsie Schlapfer and Clarice Kolar; brothers Orville, Grant and Ole Gullickson.

Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m., Thursday, February 1, 2018 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 5105 SW Franklin Ave., Beaverton, OR 97005, with a rosary preceding the service at 9:30 a.m. A reception immediately followed Mass in the Parish Center. A private Rite of Committal Service was held at Willamette National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Georgene would have taken pride in donations in her memory to Heart of Hope International Ministries, P.O. Box 2001, Vancouver, WA 98668 www.heartofhope.org to benefit children.
