Brock: CanArtopia returns to help Food Pantry

There are some things that shouldn’t be a problem in America — and even less so in booming western North Dakota.

Topping that list is hunger.

There are many social services to feed the hungry, and still some of our neighbors go to sleep hungry. Many are working, but the area’s high cost of living and rent don’t measure up on payday. Some aren’t able to work or have just moved here and are struggling to get established.

The last line of defense for those people who fall through the cracks is the Amen Food Pantry. The volunteers don’t judge the folks in need that they feed. They just do the best they can to help.

Sadly, the shelves at the pantry are once again bare. Historically, this is the time of year when the successful pantry struggles to find food for the hungry. The Dickinson Press is working with the Food Pantry to sponsoring the second CanArtopia event to fill the pantry.

Last year, 16 nonprofits and Dickinson businesses created sculptures made out of nonperishable foods that were all donated to the pantry at the end of the night. Prizes were awarded for the best and most creative sculpture and community members voted using nonperishable food items also donated. When the night was finished, everyone was a winner, because together more than 12,000 food items were donated to the pantry.

This year’s event will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at the Dickinson Recreation Center. We have moved the event up earlier this year and to a larger venue to allow for more teams and gather more food for the larger demand as our community continues to grow.

CanArtopia is just over a month away, so folks who want to participate need to start planning now to help their neighbors.

We are hoping for at least twice as many teams and food this year and want to encourage churches, schools, nonprofits, families and all types of businesses to join in on the fun.

We can promise, you will feel like a winner at the end of the night, whether or not you win a trophy.

In the meantime, while we wait and plan for CanArtopia, don’t forget about the Food Pantry. Donate anything you can to them now because they need food.
