Lazaro, Hellinger win for DSU

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Dickinson State wrestling team traveled 13 hours to wrestle at the Grand View Open and they made the trip worthwhile.

The Blue Hawks finished with four individual placers, including two champions, on Saturday.

"It's definitely easier making the road trip coming back, when have some individual champions," DSU assistant coach Tyson Springer said.

The Blue Hawks bested the University of Iowa in two individual championships with Bryden Lazaro winning at 125 pounds and Jesse Hellinger taking the title at 184.

Lazaro took a 9-4 decision over Matt Gurule, while Hellinger got a takedown in the final 10 seconds of overtime for a 3-1 win over Jeremy Fahler.

"This is probably the most physical we've wrestled all year," Springer said. "A lot of teams we wrestled against today were Division I kids from Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. Division I guys are definitely a different beast, they are real physical and our guys stepped it up."

DSU added two more placers as Brad Steele (149) finished fifth and Jose Lopez (285) took sixth.

The Blue Hawks were without head coach Thadd O'Donnell this weekend. He represented the team at the funeral of Tyler Plummer, the team's statistician and volunteer recruiter who died Wednesday at age 33.
