2 bronc riders tie for Roughrider Days Rodeo win -- on same horse
Dakota Rose may not win saddle bronc of the year in the PRCA, but she sure was the best at the Roughrider Days Rodeo.
The Korkow Rodeo bronc bucked a pair of cowboys to 85-point rides as they shared the top spot in the saddle bronc riding at the three-day rodeo that wrapped up Sunday with its third performance.
Cody Taton, a Mud Butte, S.D., native, took an 85-point ride on the bronc Sunday night to tie Troy Crowser for the top spot. Crowser, a Whitewood, S.D., cowboy, had Dakota Rose on his second re-ride Friday night. They each earned $1,570.35.
Taton said it was easy to see why the judges liked Dakota Rose.
"She's got lots of timing, kicks, gets in the air, electric -- just what bronc riders want," Taton said. "She kind of had a little scoot and just let you set your spur right up, hold your feet and let 'em go."
Taton, who ranked fifth in the world standings coming into the weekend, said sharing the win in Dickinson is a nice start to what he expects to be a hectic July.
"It ain't been horrible, but it ain't been real good yet," Taton said of his early Cowboy Christmas rodeos. "Hopefully in the next 20 days, I'll get hotter. A lot of changes go on the next month. There's a lot of good rodeos up and down the trail."
The best of the bareback riding came Sunday as Douglas, Wyo., cowboy Weston Garrett pocketed one of his biggest checks of the season after a winning 81-point ride on Whitetail, who tried taking off on a gallop out of the chute before Garrett slowed her down.
"I knew that horse was going to leave really hard, I wanted to get it right right there at the get-go and focus on getting a real strong mark out and holding them feet as she scooted across there and asked her to slow down a little bit," Garrett said. "When she breaks, build that ride, really set them feet hard and just kind of start stalling her out. Slowly she went and heck, it went great."
Garrett's 81 came shortly after Chase Erickson of Helena, Mont., had pulled into to lead with an 80 on Bambino Vold. Mandan's Casey Breuer, whose 77 on Friday night had held up through two performances, finished third.
Garrett rides again tonight at the Killdeer Mountain Roundup Rodeo, which begins at 6:30 p.m.
While the bucking horses typically steal the show, Sunday happened to be the best night in the tie-down roping.
Jake Pratt of Ellensburg, Wash., had a time of 8.2 seconds to win the performance and the rodeo and earn him $1,737.07.
Stetson Vest of Childress, Texas, had a short-lived lead of 8.7 seconds, going just before Pratt. He finished second, ahead of Killdeer's Dustin Entzel, who had a time of 9.3 seconds.
The biggest money earners of the rodeo came in the team roping, where there were 126 paid entrants.
The time of 4.9 seconds on Saturday held up for Jess Tierney of Hermosa, S.D., and Jace Crabb of Mangum, Okla. They each won $2,048.44.
Nebraskans Garrett Nokes and Matt Wilken won the third performance in 5.2 seconds, finishing tied for third in the rodeo.
Theresa Walter had a time of 15.59 seconds in the barrel racing slack on Friday afternoon and that held strong throughout the weekend, earning her $2,008.96.
Veteran Jill Moody of Letcher, S.D., won the third performance with a time of 15.9 seconds. The barrel racers went just as a storm was moving through the area and sent dust and trash blowing through the arena along with a bit of sideways rain. Moody finished sixth overall.
Bull rider Rorey Maier's 88-point score on Knockout from Saturday night held strong, earning the Timber Lake, S.D., cowboy $1,805.76.
Ross Burney of Coffeeville, Miss., made his long trip to Dickinson worthwhile, scoring the lone eight-second ride of the third performance with a 79 on Little Rascal to finish fourth in the rodeo.
Beau Clark's smoking-fast time of 3.3 seconds in Saturday night's steer wrestling performance easily held up for the win, earning him $1,999.27.
Brian Duba of Chambers, Neb., squeaked into the money by winning the third performance in 4.7 seconds and tying for seventh place.
J.B. Lord of Rapid City, S.D., was the all-around earnings champion for the rodeo with $784.46 as he was the only cowboy to earn money in two events. He finished sixth in the steer wrestling and tied for eighth in the team roping with heeler Jesse Frederickson of Menoken.
Several local contestants finished in the money.
Killdeer's Scott Kleeman tied for third (4.1 seconds) and South Heart's Seth Murphy tied for seventh (4.7 seconds) in the steer wrestling.
A pair of former DSU cowboys finished in the money in the roughstock events.
Richardton's Zane Forster took sixth in the bareback riding with a 74-point ride on Friday night and Riley Knoll's 77-point ride on Saturday held up to tie for fifth in the saddle bronc riding.
Team ropers Layne Carson of Grassy Butte and Tim Franzen of Dickinson tied for eighth (6 seconds). Dickinson's Becky Fuson tied for eighth in the barrel racing (15.95 seconds).
