No luck at NHSFR finals for ND contestants
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. -- The stage was set for Mandan's Teddi Schwagler to chase a national championship in the goat tying.
But, it was not to be.
A winning time of 8.72 seconds in Saturday morning's performance at the National High School Finals Rodeo put Schwagler second in the average going into the evening's short-round performance. But, she finished 19th of 20 contestants with a time of 12.74 and ended the rodeo in 17th place.
Jordyn Schaefer of Des Lacs had a time of 2.87 seconds to finish seventh in the breakaway roping.
She capped the rodeo eighth in the average with a three-round total of 10.28 seconds.
Lexus Kelsch, a McLaughlin, S.D., barrel racer who won the North Dakota championship in June, tipped a barrel to finish 17th in the short round with a time of 22.779 seconds. She ended up 17th in the average with a three-round combined time of 58.07 seconds.
Richardton's Dalton Rixen and Mandan's Logan Berg didn't register a short-round ride in the saddle bronc riding and bareback riding, respectively.
Team North Dakota finished 22nd in the standings. Texas won the team title and the boys team title while Arizona won the girls team title.
