Blue Hawks nab 2 third place finishes
JAMESTOWN -- The Dickinson State men's and women's golf teams got their season under way with a quality start at the Jimmie Open.
DSU, as a team, placed third in both the men's and women's tournaments as Chandler Pender, Brian Quintus and Laura Duppong all placed in the individual top 10 on Wednesday at the Jamestown Country Club.
"It's a tough, tight course," DSU first-year head coach Thadd O'Donnell said. "We were scheduled to play at Hillcrest, which is a much more open course. It's kind of a tough opener.
"I don't know if it reached 100 degrees, but it came close," he added with a laugh.
On the men's side, the Blue Hawks were nine strokes off from team winner Valley City State with a 320. Pender and Quintus each shot an 81 in a tie for eighth place. Tristen Long (83) and Matthew Altner (84) were one and two strokes off the top 10, respectively.
"I thought the guys played pretty well," O'Donnell said. "They are capable of scoring well. At a course like that when you make a mistake, it really makes you pay."
Jamestown College placed second with a 327, while DSU posted a 329.
"It was a good opener in the fact that they aren't going to see things much tougher than they did today," O'Donnell said.
On the women's side, Laura Duppong (94) was the lone DSU representative in the top 10. Senior Caitlin Hurlock was one stroke out of the top 10 with a 95.
"Laura is a very calm player," O'Donnell said. "She's real relaxed. She doesn't get too excited and in courses like that it's important have that mentality.
"Caitlin is a competitor. She's completing hard every time she steps up to the ball."
Minot State ran away with the team win, scoring a 329 and had the top three individuals at the meet. Jamestown College finished with a 375 and the Blue Hawks with a 386.
O'Donnell said both teams were frustrated after playing in the hot temperatures, but the Blue Hawks will be back to play at the course on Sept. 24.
O'Donnell hopes then to see how far along the teams has matured in that timeframe.
"I think for us it's to get everybody in and playing a tournament," O'Donnell said. "You go out in practice, out on the driving range, putting and play a few rounds. It's a whole new monster when you step onto the tee with other teams in a tournament setting."
