Reiss caps remarkable Badlands Circuit Finals with average title in steer wrestling

By The Press Staff

MINOT -- Jason Reiss is going to Oklahoma City.

The Dickinson steer wrestler had an incredible weekend to win the average at the Badlands Circuit Finals rodeo, a four-round event that concluded Sunday at the All Seasons Arena.

"Sometimes you have a weekend like that, and sometimes they go the other way," Reiss said. "That's the way it is."

Reiss, 40, came into the weekend ranked 14th in the Badlands Circuit money standings and was out of the running for the season championship. Winning the Badlands Circuit Finals average title was his only chance to reach the 2013 National Circuit Finals Rodeo, which is next April in Oklahoma City.

"It's what everybody wants," Reiss said. "That's why we go all year is to make the circuit finals. To make the National Circuit Finals is just a bonus."

Reiss did it, seemingly, with ease.

After clocking in at 4.9 seconds in the first round, Reiss won the second and third rounds on Friday and Saturday with times of 3.5 and 4.3 seconds, respectively, and placed second in Sunday's final round with a 4.8 to finish with a 17.5-second time on four head.

"I come out on that second night and went 3.5 and everything went uphill from there," Reiss said.

Another Dickinson cowboy came up just short of winning the season title in the steer wrestling.

Sheldon Portwine came into the Badlands Circuit Finals with a $53 lead over South Dakotan Forest Sainsbury in the steer wrestling.

Though Portwine won Sunday night's fourth round with a 3.9-second turn, it wasn't enough for him to hold on to his year-end lead. Sainsbury, who won the first round, pulled ahead thanks to a fourth-place finish in the average that earned him $553.

Unofficially, Sainsbury ends the regular season with $11,038 in earnings while Portwine finished second at $10,683.

A PRCA spokesperson said Monday that the final Badlands Circuit standings, including the official year-end winners in each event, will not officially be announced until later in the week.

One area contestant who definitely secured his year-end title was Abe Dillman.

The Grassy Butte cowboy came into the weekend with a huge lead in the bull riding and didn't have to do much to hold on.

He won the first round on Thursday and placed second in Sunday's final round with a 78 to help him finish fourth in the average and finish the season, unofficially, with $17,420 in earnings.

In the bareback riding, Jet Price of Buffalo, S.D., won the first two rounds to help him edge Mandan's Ty Breuer for the average title. Price had 325 total points on four rides and Breuer had 323.

Joe Gunderson of Agar, S.D., unofficially beat Mandan's Casey Breuer in the year-end bareback riding standings.

Troy Crowser of Whitewood, S.D., cruised to the average win in the saddle bronc riding while Cole Elshere of Faith, S.D., did more than enough to keep the nearly $5,500 lead he came into the weekend with.

Jay Mattson and Matt Kasner won the team roping average with a total of 30.1 seconds on four head.

Grassy Butte's Layne Carson and Dickinson's Tim Franzen won Sunday's fourth round with a time of 4.5 seconds.

Parshall's Preston Billadeau and Jared Bilby of Bridgeport, Neb., likely held on for the year-end victory despite placing only once at the Badlands Circuit Finals. They were second behind Carson and Franzen.

In the tie-down roping, Dane Kissack of Spearfish, S.D., won the average with a total of 36.6 seconds on four head. Justin Scofield of Volga, S.D., added to his year-end standings lead of more than $2,500 with $2,602 in earnings and a second-place finish in the average.

Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D., locked up the year-end and average titles in the barrel racing.
