Midgets play Bismarck in the state-qualifying tennis match today

BISMARCK -- The Dickinson High girls tennis team could have closed up shop multiple times throughout the first day of the West Region Tournament.

However, the Midgets battled back after losing the opening match 5-0 to Bismarck Century and responded with a 3-2 win over Jamestown on Thursday.

"Century took it to us in the first match," Dickinson head coach James Kramer said. "The girls really performed well in the second match."

The weather pushed the West Region Tourney inside, which made for a long day.

The Patriots quickly finished off the singles sets, but the Midgets fought back in the doubles. Each set went to extras, but Century prevailed both times.

Nonetheless, the close defeats kept Dickinson hungry. The Midgets took the Nos. 1 and 3 singles matches and finished off the match with a No. 2 doubles win against Jamestown.

Lindsey Bakken defeated Kara Fix in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, while Mariah Jorda defeated Luna Fraga 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2. Kayla Wallace and McKenna Love teamed up for the doubles win 7-5, 6-4.

The Midgets continue their quest for a bid to the state tournament with Bismarck High at 6 a.m. today. Dickinson will then compete in the individual side of the West Region Tourney.

"It's been a long time since Dickinson has been playing that third match in the team qualifier," Kramer said. "I think we have some confidence carrying over. The girls feel that if we play well, we have an opportunity to win that match against Bismarck."
