Midget volleyball falls to Bismarck
Following a 3-1 victory against Williston, the Dickinson High volleyball team was hoping to carry their momentum into its matchup against Bismarck High.
While they had more confidence and control than in previous matches, that wasn't enough to top the Demons who swept the Midgets on Wednesday at the DHS gymnasium with set scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.
"We asked them to be really aggressive from the service line and that kind of bit us a little bit in set two," head coach Jay Schobinger said. "Bismarck is a team, when they're in system, they're throwing fast stuff at you and that's really hard to defend. We had to try to keep them out of system and I thought we did a better job as the night went on with that."
Bismarck came out on top thanks to an aggressive offense. Demon sophomore Macy Wetsch had eight kills, followed by juniors Sam Hettinger and Faith Wahl who had seven and five, respectively.
The second and third sets were similar in the way that the Midgets were always four or five points behind the Demons.
"Our energy probably coming out in the first set wasn't what it should have been," Dickinson senior Lexi Jordheim said. "In the second and third set we really tried to pick it up but there were a few girls who just couldn't get there. Other than that, our serving was a lot better than the first set."
Jordheim, who led the Midgets with two aces, said serving has been an issue for the team all season.
"That's a typical thing for us," she said. "Which doesn't make sense because we always practice it and preach it but we can't get it quite yet."
Senior Morgan Kainz led the Midgets offense with 13 kills, followed by senior Mariah Mortensen who added six. Junior setter Lauren Jorda had 27 assists on the night.
On the defensive side of things, sophomore Kendryn Bullinger had 15 digs and Jordheim contributed 12.
"We just told the girls you have to play hard," Schobinger said. "If you go out and you play hard and the team across the net beats you, then they're better than you that night. Most of tonight I thought our kids played fairly hard. We just have to eliminate a few more mistakes."
