Midgets fall in high-energy battle against Bismarck
The Bismarck High football team scored five touchdowns in the first quarter, but that didn't get Dickinson High down.
Dickinson senior Dawson Dutchak, who replaced senior Antonio Nunez at quarterback after he suffered a knee injury, ran 76 yards to put the Midgets on the board with 1 minute and 25 seconds left in the opening quarter, igniting his team.
The Midgets scored four touchdowns and kept their spirits high in their 62-26 loss to the Demons on Wednesday at the Biesiot Activities Center.
"We got off to a slow start," Dickinson head coach John Tuchscherer said. "In the second quarter we started playing some football and we got a little more physical upfront. We were able to put some points on the scoreboard. Our guys battled. I can't ask them to do any more than that."
The game climaxed in the second quarter when the teams combined to score three touchdowns in a matter of seconds.
Dickinson (1-8, 1-5 West Region) junior running back Martin Lopez scored with 5:19 left in the first half, bringing the score to 35-13. The Demons (7-2, 5-1 West Region) answered 21 seconds later with a 50-yard run from junior Joe Jahner, increasing their lead to 42-13.
On the kick return, junior Morgan Wardner ran 97 yards for another Midget touchdown, ending the half with a score of 42-19.
"I was running and the blockers made a great wall for me," Wardner "I had to get past one guy and they did the rest. I just had to run."
The game lacked long drives, and highlighted both teams ability to come alive with one play.
"Our offense and special teams kept making big plays which made our energy go up," Wardner said. "We didn't have all our starters on defense and we had a few injuries like we lost our quarterback and Connor (Hoenke) was hurt so we didn't have those players but we made big plays."
Demon senior Jalen Sprecher ran in three touchdowns for the Demons with rushes of 53, 3 and 48 yards. He ended the night with a team-leading 242 rushing yards over 14 carries.
"He's pretty special," Bismarck head coach Mark Gibson said. "We don't have to block perfect everytime. He's going to make things happen. I thought our offense played real well. Also, our fullback Jared Rath, the kid that's kind of a catalyst to our running game, very proud of him."
Rath ended the evening with 33 rushing yards over six carries.
Scoring tapered off in the second half. Sprecher kicked off the third quarter with his third of the night followed by Bismarck senior Pierce Helm who ran one yard, bringing the score to 55-19.
Dickinson kept chipping away, though, never letting their energy die.
Following a nine-play, 76 yard drive, sophomore Tanner Nixon scored the final Midget touchdown.
Bismarck's Brycen Just concluded the scoring with a 1-yard rush with just 2:19 left in the game.
"I'm proud of our guys for not quitting and fighting all the way to the end," Tuchscherer said.
