Down two sets to one, the Dickinson State volleyball team needed to win the fourth set to stay alive. With Mayville State leading 24-21, the Blue Hawks kicked it into gear. Thanks to a kill and a Comet mistake, the Blue Hawks cut the lead to 24-23.

The teams volleyed, a Comet went in for the kill, and the ball hit near the line.

The Blue Hawks thought they had tied the game, but the referee ruled the ball inbounds, granting the Comets the 3-1 win at Scott Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 3.

"We didn't start off very strong," junior libero Alli Hert said. "We came back just a little bit too late but I was really proud of the hustle and the fight we came back with."

In the opening set, the Blue Hawks took a significant lead before putting the Comets away with a 25-13 win.

"We just played our game and that's when we play our best volleyball honestly," Hert said. "It was our tempo and we were communicating really well. When we're communicating, nothing really goes wrong."

Mayville shook off the loss and fired back at the Blue Hawks in the second set, winning 25-21.

The teams exchanged points in the first half of the third set. Finally, the Comets took hold with a 12-10 lead and built it up to a 25-19 win.

"I think that us and Dickinson are such like teams," Mayville head coach Lindsey Johnson said. "We have moments of greatness and moments where you don't know who left the gym or whatever. I think we're just both searching for wins."

The Comets found the win in the final set, bringing their conference record to 3-12 while Dickinson falls to 3-11.

Mayville sophomore Hannah Bliss led the team with 15 kills. Junior Cassidy Miller put up 14 kills, and also added four blocks.

"Mayville found their hot hitter," Dickinson head coach Jen Hartman said. "Cassidy Miller played amazing and had a great game. We just couldn't dig her at all."

Junior outside Kylie Hadley led the Blue Hawks with 22 digs, followed by Hert who added 14.

Senior middle blocker Shelby Gustafson had a team-leading 12 kills with Hadley and sophomore outside hitter Ellie Hanser contributing nine each.

"They played with a lot of intensity and enthusiasm," Hartman said. "It was a fun match regardless of the outcome."

The Blue Hawks play their last game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. at Scott Gymnasium.
