Pitchers duel falls in Sabre Dogs favor

MINOT — The Badlands and Souris Valley pitchers combined for 22 strikeouts on Wednesday night.

Big Sticks starter Roman Oliu struck out 10 over six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. Meanwhile, Sabre Dogs starter Jarret Whorff threw eight innings, fanning 11 and giving up one run on three hits en route to a 2-1 Sabre Dogs win from Corbett Field. The Big Sticks took the win 7-5 Thursday, July 12, though.

The game remained scoreless through five and a half innings before a two-run blast from designated hitter Blake Ebo put Souris Valley on the board.

In the eighth, Badlands third baseman Drew Staley hit a solo home run, but that was all the Big Sticks would muster. Right fielder Aaron Fritts had the other two hits for the visiting team.

Zach Lang took over for Whorff on the bump in the final inning, striking out one and picking up the save.

On Thursday, Staley went yard again, this time with Gabe Knowles on base, propelling the Big Sticks (23-16) to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

The Sabre Dogs (29-13) tied things up in the second with help from a two-run homer from DJ Lewis.

After the Big Sticks added three more, Souris Valley threatened.

Up 7-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Badlands closer Cort Dietrich loaded the bases, but he struck out Clay Ashworth and Alex Hay to end the outing.
