DSU's hot streak continues with a 4-game sweep

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Dickinson State softball team isn't slowing down anytime soon.

The Blue Hawks have now scored six or more runs in their last eight games -- including double-digit runs in four games.

DSU supplied 25 runs and 27 hits to finish off Valley City State 14-2, 11-3 in a four-game weekend sweep on Sunday.

During the four-game stretch, the Blue Hawks totaled eight home runs and received solid pitching performances from senior Taysia Kaufman and sophomore Janel LaRont.

In the opening game, Kaufman threw six innings, allowing two runs on a two-run Savannah McMillin home run, while striking out three. Kaufman also supplied a hit and scored a run in the game.

The Blue Hawks (18-13) opened the game with a four-run first inning and finished the game with a five-run sixth. Nicole Lobato powered DSU's bats going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs and scored three runs. Rebecca Lopez supplied 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. LaRont added three hits, including a double with a RBI and two runs.

McMillin went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the Vikings (3-21). Caitlin Giesbrecht had the team's other hit and Brittany Lehner scored a run.

During the second game, the Blue Hawks used back-to-back four-run frames in the third and fourth innings.

LaRont pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out three. She also led DSU's hit parade going 2-for-2 with a home run, triple, three RBIs and scored three runs.

Lobato supplied her third home run of the day, going 1-for-1 with two RBIs and two runs. Alex Vargas went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the third inning and three RBIs. Lopez and Justenna Gutierrez each had two hits as Lopez scored two runs and Gutierrez drove in two runs.

The Blue Hawks continue their season by traveling back to Billings to face Montana State-Billings beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
