Harrison resigns because of visa problems
After one season serving as the Dickinson State women's basketball team's head coach, Caleb Harrison will not be returning for the 2013-14 season.
Harrison, a New Zealand native, officially resigned Monday from his coaching and teaching positions due to complications with renewing his visa.
According to DSU athletic director Tim Daniel, both the athletics department and Harrison had been working on the paperwork since March but due to processing delays by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Harrison's approval was not received in time.
"We would like to thank Caleb for his contributions to the DSU athletic department and to Dickinson State," director of athletics Tim Daniel said in an official press release. "We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
Harrison was unavailable for comment, but expresses in the press release that he regrets having to resign and wishes his team the best of luck this season.
"I enjoyed my time at DSU and believe in my team," he said. "I wish them a very successful year."
Harrison was also an adjunct instructor in the department of health and physical education as well as an assistant sports marketing and information director, alongside cross country head coach Michael Nekuda who will now be the lead contact.
With so many holes to fill, Daniel and the athletics department have begun an immediate search for a temporary head women's basketball coach and a permanent SMID.
In the meantime -- for the head coaching position -- men's basketball head coach Ty Orton and women's assistant coach Ashleigh Franklin will be in charge of preseason conditioning. As for the SMID position, Daniel wants to fill it as soon as possible and the process of reviewing applications is underway.
"We have to go through the full process. We are going to try and fill it as soon as we possibly can," Daniel said in a phone interview. "The No. 1 criteria is to find a qualified candidate to fill the requirements of the position.
"We want to step up on our marketing side of it and our promotion side of it things. We have a goal of doing some more on that side of it so that's going to be a focus on the job."
