DSU halts losing streak, splits doubleheader
The Dickinson State baseball team’s 12-game losing streak finally came to an end.
Doane got off to a quick start scoring five runs in the top of the first with DSU only able to respond with one run as Chris Mjelstad doubled to left center to drive in Joe Binstock, who went 3 for 5, drove in two runs and an RBI. But by the bottom of the fourth and down 6-2, DSU’s offense warmed up and scored four runs to tie it up.
Jeff VanCleave started the scoring off as he doubled down the right field line to advance the runners and bring in Miles O’Donnell. Two batters later, Caleb Burgard came home on a wild pitch by Doane pitcher Aaron O’Dowd — finished 3 2/3 innings with six hits, five earned runs and walked four batters.
In the same at bat, Sam Bisson singled to bring in VanCleave and Mjelstad. Bisson finished 1 for 5 with three RBI. DSU took an 8-6 lead in the fifth inning. Doane answered with a run in the sixth, while the Blue Hawk posted a run in the seventh.
Eric Seiler pitched for the Blue Hawks, lasted seven innings, allowed seven runs on 11 hits and struck out eight. Ian Anderson came in for relief for the last two innings with two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
DSU started the second game off like the first, down by five runs, but this time it couldn’t come back.
Grace kept running away with the game, going up 9-0 and held the Blue Hawks scoreless for six innings.
Grace pitcher Jacinto Garcia threw a complete game, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out three. DSU’s four hits came from Mjelstad with two, Burgard and O’Donnell.
Grace outfielder Johnny Miranda was perfect for the Royals, going 4 for 4 with three runs and four RBI. Andres Enriquez also had a strong outing and went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI.
Mjelstad went 2 for 4 with a run while VanCleave drove in the team’s other run. Jordan Yussman got the start for the Blue Hawks and lasted three innings with seven hits, six runs and five walked batters.
Eric Contreras came in to try and do damage control but allowed seven hits, two runs and five walks in six innings.
DSU plays Bethesda University of California at 12:30 p.m. today.
